When Phoebe had kennel cough, it sounded like she was trying to get something out of her throat. She would gag and hack, but nothing came out. She also wasn't eating much, but that might have been from the worms she was battling at the time as well.

In another thread, someone said that kennel cough can only be contracted in close quarters. My vet told me the exact opposite. She suspected that my pup got it from a friend's dog, who is constantly tied up in their front yard ( :( ). She said this other dog could have caught it from any dog who might have been barking at her from across the road - it can travel that far!

Interestingly enough, this friend's dog had been vaccinated, but still caught the disease. My sister's dog, who had also been vaccinated and exposed to both the friend's dog and my pup, did not get it. The vet believes it's because this other dog is much smaller, and is prone to health issues, and so her immune system is weaker.
