3 month puppy dies of Parvo, new puppies in house HELP?
Question: While Our puppy was 3 months old, we have a set of 6 more precious puppy babies in the house. Now we lost Mercy last Friday, but Our main concern is that now we have a litter of Bichons that are 3 weeks old. Five are still nursing but one is being bottle fed. We took Mercy to the vet and was told it was just fine and brought her home after a nights stay and that it wasn"t contagious so we did expose bottle fed puppy to her. Are the five safe because they are still being nursed? What should we do to keep them safe? We have bleached and bleached and did I say BLEACHED!!!?Please Help save six darling puppies. Also Mercy was still drinking water and trying to eat when she passed, Is it possible that Parvo <even though Our vet said it was Parvo when we returned her Friday after her stay> was not the reason she died? Mercy had her 3rd vaccination one week before death. She only had 1 shot to go. Could the shot the week before make her show high Parvo positive test in test? Please whatever help you can provide will be useful as Our Vet hasn't been helpfull enough as to what to do. Thanks T. Payne Answer: Hi Theresa Exactly what symptoms did Mercy have? Something thing that confuses me is .. You brought her to the vet & he said you could take her home? When did the vet diagnose her with Parvo? Has your vet enquired about the other pups? Has he seen them? Were all the puppies together before? Do they have fever? are they vomiting, do they have diarrhea? are they eating? are they lethargic? Where they from different litters? Answer: Mercy had all the symptoms of Parvo but she did not stop eating or drinking. She was diagnosed with just a puppy virus <noncontagious> like a 24 hour thing. Mercy stayed one night at the Vet's. When he had us pick her up he even said she had improvement. When she came home She started throwing up again and diahrea but never did she stop drinking or eating. She even played with her toys. She was not of this litter that we have left. She was a new member of our family born in July and brought home September 11th. She was returned the next day to the Vet and he then diagnosed her with Parvo right before death. She only had one shot left in the series and she had just had her shot a week before death. He hasn't seen the new puppies as he was out of town when we had to use another vet for this litter's Mom check up after birth and for the puppies dewclawing. He said he was concerned about Our other puppies but to just clean with bleach and wait and see. The puppies are only 3 weeks old. Yes Mercy was from a totally different litter outside Our home but Our Momma dog had puppies while Mercy was here. The puppies so far show no signs but Mercy died just 2 days ago. The bottle fed puppy of the 6 in litter was directly exposed to Mercy but has showed no signs yet. The puppy was in a crate next to Mercy on the couch while I fed him. Mercy even laid on his heating pad for awhile. We cleaned it. Thanks for Your interest and help. Anxiously awaiting Reply. Answer: Theresa Apparently puppies have immunity to Parvo for a short period (about 8 weeks) they get this from their mom, providing she was properly vaccinated. However the bottle fed pup will not have this same immunity. I don't think that the vaccine brought on the Parvo. However she may very well have caught it the vets office, Parvo has an incubation period from 4-14 days. Had she been in contact with any other pups? If not this might be your source. Apart from bleaching everything ( as you've done) and watching for symptoms I'm not quite sure what else you could do. Maybe call another vet for information? PS..yes the shot may make her test postive (links) I'm sure others on the board will be able to be more helpful... The vet's assistant picked up Mercy and she licked her face. This and the vet's table are my biggest suspicions. My little boy being bottle fed is crying alot now and last feces had some mucous and a tincture of blood. Heaven help the other five pups. Momma was up on her shots but due this November so she is at the last of her protection. It's gonna be a long night. Thanks again for your concern and I read all the web links you gave me. This was very informative. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
