Info On Meds

Question:
I have three sick kittens who where surrender over to me this weekend along side with there mother and one other kitten, the women who has been taking care of them has already put out $1,300.00 in vet bills and could no longer do so, I was wondering what these three meds are givien for.. her vet was never clear about what was wrong with them and said it was nothing more then a virus, they don't see my vet till next week and there for I though I would ask in hopes someone might know something.

Chester on Amoxil 100mg for 10days
Sandy on Amoxil 125mg for 10days
Zorro on Metronidazole 25mg for 7days

Answer:
Amoxil is an antibiotic and Metronidazole is an antibacterial and antiprotozeal

Answer:
That much I know but why would it be given to a kitten who has blood in his poo?, there's no more the a drop and they've tested it and said there was nothing wrong with it but they gave no answer for the blood in the poo.

Answer:
They wouldn't be for a virus as viruses are like a cold, antibiotics won't do a thing for it.

Maybe there was a mild infection, and that's what they are for. Have they been on this long? Maybe they have an ongoing infection that is resistant to the medication?

I just read that the third one (the one starting with M) is used to treat "inflammatory bowel disease" and a lot of other ongoing diseases. I would guess this kitty has one, and probably has to take it all the time. The same thing goes for amoxil, which can be used to treat common cat diseases on an ongoing basis.

Maybe that's why the bills are so high (because they have to take the pills always)??

Answer:
To my knowledge, the Metronidazole can be given for only short periods of time, due to some rather serious side effects. Does this kitten have giardia or something similiar?

The Amoxil is often given for cats with upper respiratory infections - rhinotracheitis.

What was the 1300.00$ for?

Answer:
So just nobody thinks bad of this person, the mother of these kittens was a stray who she taken in and brought to the vet the next day to make sure she was fine and had blood test done for everything under the sun and it all came back clean, all she had was ring worm and the meds for that stop when they found out she was going to have kittens. the $1,300 is from the time Missy (Mom cat) was taken to the vet and from all three kittens going back and forth from the vet to the vet hospital, the three kittens all got sick once they started taking Pyr-a pam and since then it's been down hill, they where tested for worms and have none but they where given pills to take for the next three months which they have to take every two weeks.. which I don't get cause I've had a cat on this and they took it twice and that was it. none of the kittens have had a blood work done and will be going in next week for it, no one has given clear answer to what wrong with these three fur balls of love but I won't stop till there other better or we know what's wrong with them.

Answer:
