Dog is drinking too much water?

Question:
HI, my German Sheppard is 10 years old,and lately he is drinking excessive amounts of water. He is constantly drinking water, sometimes he drinks non stop for a few minutes,he has always drank a lot ,but know seems to be more than ever. His eating habits have not changed ,and he has lots of energy and is still very playfull. He has lost a little weight, maybe 5 or 10 pounds(his normal weight is 120,he's big).Otherwise he seems healthy.

thanks for any advice

Answer:
I am not a vet, but this sounds like it may be diabetes. Please consider bringing your shephard in for a vet visit.

Answer:
Have you brought him to a vet to rule out diabetes or other illness? Weight loss and great thirst can be signs of diabetes. A vet should be your first thought.

If he shows a clean bill of health, then I would chalk it up to old age. 10 is senior for a large dog such as a GSD. It could be that he's just thirsty. My GSD will drink constantly for 2-3 minutes if she's been active. Has he been active when he stops for a drink?

Good luck with your dog! I hope he's feeling ok.

Answer:
Well, I took him to the vet for blood and urine work last week. The vet could not find anything wrong with him.Lats weekend he was almost back to noraml again, but a few days ago he stopped eating and he slowly got worse , and this morning he died on the backseat of my car on the way to the vet. Today is probally the worst day of my life. I have lost my best friend of 10 years. Its going to be hard going home tonight knowing he is not going to be there anymore.

Answer:
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It sounds like it was just his time. At 10 years old, your old friend lived a long, happy life. He'll wait for you on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Answer:
Gosh, so terribly sorry to hear of your loss.

Answer:
I am so sorry for your loss. I know that it is no consolation but he lived a long time for a big dog and it sounds like he had a very good life with a loving owner. He will be watching over you from Rainbow Bridge and playing with lots of others

Answer:
Oh No! I am so very sorry to hear this. Something was wrong inside the poor guy and it just couldn't be detected.

Again, sorry you have had to go through this...
