Why does my cat go crazy after using the bathroom?

Question:
My 4 year old cat has been freaking out lately after using the litter box. It happens at least once a day (for about 4 or so months now). I have noticed that it happens most often after she has taken a "number 2." She meows a sad meow and runs frantically around the house. Could this be a sign of illness (worms, bladder infection, etc.)? Please help.
Thank you,
Poseasme

Answer:
When your cat goes, is it diarrhea, or very hard stools? Either can cause enough discomfort to make a cat avoid the litterbox altogether, since they usually think the box itself is the cause of pain.

What are you feeding the cat? Does she go outside? Do you know if she cries when urinating too?

Answer:
Thank you for your reply. Her stools are normal (not diarrhea, not too hard) and no, she doesn't cry when urinating. She only goes outside when we do for short periods of time (on a 3rd floor balcony). However, she played in the backyard at our other apartment, where we lived 6 months ago. She never has "accidents" outside the litter box and I feed her only hard Purina Cat Chow (sometimes tuna).

Answer:
The first thing I would do is change to diet to something of better quality, like Nutro. Purina is full of corn and cheap fillers and can cause many problems in cats - allergies, etc.

She may have parasites, or an anal gland problem. You should take her to the vet to be checked and take a stool sample with you.

Answer:
An alarm-bell went off in my reading your question. My first cat here in Canada(Tigger),I fed Purina cat-chow,not thinking catfood would ever harm my cat.He had to be put down at 2yrs old, with severe kidney and other problems. The vet at the time said never, ever feed cats Purina Cat-Chow.
This was a long time ago and I have had many cats since..Nutro is very good,I use "Healthy Choice"and"Nutrience",but they also get a spoonful of"wet"food morning and night, everybody needs a treat ever now and then Also very important is fresh cool water.
Non-Grocery store cat-food is more expensive, but is a saving in the long run,vet-bills will sky-rocket if your cat gets sick and you don't want that for the cat you love or your pocket-book.Anita

Answer:
Thank you so much to anita and lucky...I will switch to another (quality) brand of cat food right away. I will also take her (and a stool sample) to my vet. Many thanks from myself and Lillith!

You are very welcome...hope your kitty will be ok. Anita
