Heartworm med recommendations
Question: Well, since Buster's 'seizures' are getting shorter and less frequent (see: He's taken Revolution before and had a reaction to it (mega-drooling -- like buckets of drool!!), so that's outta the question and he's now taking Interceptor. Does anyone have any recommendations for heartworm? I'd rather give him a pill that's ONLY for heartworms (no flea meds), since he's not at high risk for fleas and I don't want to medicate him for nothing. Does anyone know of a heartworm med that has low toxicity? Something that has fewer instances of side-effects? Thanks!! Answer: My Eskimo is taking Sentinel - no obvious side effects as long as pill is given with a full meal - this is important. The Sentinel does not have flea meds. Answer: Well I use Heartgard. And I have used it on all my dogs.Even on my first GSD,who has been gone for 10 years and was 13.And none of my dogs have ever had any side effects or allergy reactions to them. The Heartgard has no flea meds. Answer: I always use Heartguard,no problems with either of my 3 fuzzbuts. And I never heard of any side effects with Heartguard.I'm glad you found why Buster was having seizure, what a reflief! One of my dogs had focal seizures on Sentinel. That said, talk to your vet. I know there are two main types of heartworm meds, so if your dog has had a reacion to one, the other type may be okay. Personally I've opted not to give any HW preventatives. After many, many discussions with my vet we agreed it was better to just not give them, but continue to test regularily. Does not kill adult fleas but they will never reproduce (like birth control for fleas). The adult will die off in 2 - 4 weeks. I would recommend Interceptor (heartworm, whipworm, roundworm and hookworm protection) or Heartgard (heartworm, roundworm and hookworm). Personally my dog is on Sentinel. Interceptor is made by the same company (Novartis) and it's basically Sentinel without the flea control portion. Answer: Heartgard Plus for my babies. It's against intestinal worms and heartworms. (There's also Heartgard (without the plus) that's even more basic). Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
