Does anyone know what's wrong with my cat's skin?
Question: My cat, generally healthy for all his 18 years, has developed red raw spots on his front legs, and now they're starting on his belly. He's been licking and chewing these spots, they must be itchy and sore. Am I missing something out of his diet, or has he developed an allergy, ...? Any thoughts? Answer: Could he have fleas? Fleas can set off an allergic reaction. He could have developed an allergy to something in his food, not uncommon in older kitties. What are you feeding? Is there anything you're using outside/inside - cleaners, insecticides - that he could've come in contact with? For instance, if you spray the lawn and he goes outside, he could have walked through it. With a kitty of that age, I personally would be off to the vet for a general check-up (including blood if you can afford it) and a chat about his skin. Old cats, like old people, need special care. Got a pic? Answer: I would take poor kitty to the vet as, like badger siad, it could be a number of different things. At 18 yr old he should be having an examination twice a year. Answer: You should take your cat to the vet, he could have ringworm or some other kind of infection. Here are some symptoms of ringworm from http://www.thepetprofessor.com/artic...le.aspx?id=361 Loss of hair in circular patterns Hair loss in irregular patterns Scaly skin Redness or itchiness Deformed nails and claws Ringworm is contagious and can be transmitted to people as well as other pets.
