Kitten has lump on belly
Question: We just got a new kitten who is now 10 weeks old. 2 weeks ago he got his first shot. We just noticed a lump the size of a quarter on his abdomen near the center. It moves back and forth a little when you touch and feels like a bubble of liquid. What could this be? He is eating, sleeping and playing like normal and has another appointment in two weeks. Is it safe to wait? Answer: Sounds like an ombilical hernia. The vet should tell you if it's just that when you go in for the kitten's booster shots. Answer: It likely is an umbilical hernia, and unfortunately this will most likely need to be surgically repaired. It's common, so don't worry too much, but you should make an appointment to go back soon, rather than waiting for the boosters, as it could be dangerous to your kitty if the opening in the muscle closes on it's own (it has been known to happen) and pinches the part of his intestines that is sticking through it. That could kill him. If he's not neutered, your vet can do both at the same time, and at any age, as long as he weighs more than 800g (though your vet may not do pediatric neuters, so please ask). It's safer for him if he has both surgeries at the same time, rather than risking 2 doses of anesthetic. Good luck. Melissa Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
