Cats fighting
Question: Hi, I have two cats (male and female and brother and sister) both fixed 1 and 2 year old. They have always gotten along always playfighting and hardly ever left each other's side. However yesterday I came home from work and found they must have gotten into a major fight because now neither can stand to see the other. As soon as they see each other they start yelling loudly and the hair on their back stands striaght up. I had to seperate them over night so I could sleep but this morning when we try to put them together again they start yelling at each other and hissing. When they are seperated they act as if they are looking for each other. Is there anything we can do to get them to get along again? They have both lived with us since birth and never acted like this. There have been no other changes that I can think of that would have caused this. Please help Answer: Can one of the cats be sick. I remember when one of my cats was sick...before I even knew it and the other 4 cats were very mean to her. Once she was better it; took awhile; but things got back to normal. Answer: It appears cats can sense illness in other cats, one of my friends has two cats, one of them is epilleptic and the other ALWAYS goes for him if he walks past!! Weedle Answer: From what I can gather niether appears sick in the least bit. Matter of fact both are acting egsactly the same way. I've let them have the run of the house again and all they do is stare at each other and yell and hiss. They are not eatting either;.. Answer: That's weird. In my many years of owning cats I have found that they usually either get along or they don't, but I've never had a pair that were fine and then suddenly didn't like each other. A few things come to mind that you could try though. Do they have separate food and water dishes? If not, I would suggest giving them each their own dishes in separate rooms. If they are both eating out of one dish they may be feeling competitive for food. Do you have at least 3 litter boxes? There should be one for each cat, plus an extra. Most cats don't like to pee and poop in the same box and some cats won't go in a box another cat has been in. They may also be trying to compete for sleeping places. I take old towels or blankets and put them in different corners of the house so they have lots of choice of where to sleep. Again I would say 2 cats, 3 sleeping places so they don't compete. They may have had a tiff and will work it out, but they may also be at an age where they want their own space now. If they continue to act strangely and refuse to eat they should go to the vet.
