dog shaking head from swollen ear

Question:
My dog had dried blood in her ear. I stopped by the vet today and they gave me some ear medicane. I thought it may be from a cut, but asked them what else it could be from. They said that our area has a problem with funguses and that it would be treated with the same medicane. I came home tonight and my daughter administered the medicane as perscribed and cleaned her ear out with cotton. It has been a few hours and we have checked on her. Her ear is swollen and she is still bothered by her ear.

Has anyone else ever experienced these isssues with their dog? Any input would be appreciated. I can't call a vet untill the morning and am worried about her.

Thanks,
Michell Z.

Answer:
Well, I've never experience this problem before but maybe you should try to comfort her (not alot) and give her some bits of treats to distract her from her ear. Or try to get her special favorite toy (all dogs usually have a fav.) and play with her for a while until she gets tired and falls asleep or something... And when she asleep at night, make sure to check on her often so she is not scratching or shaking her head or anything. If she does, try to comfort her until she sleeps again.
I'm not sure if it's gonna help but I hope it does!
Good Luck!!

You need to call the vet immediately. It sounds like the dog ruptured a blood vessel in the space between the skin of the outside ear and inside ear. (This sounds worse than it is.) Keep using the medicine. Put tube socks on the paws to keep the dog from scratching. If they continue to scratch, it can "tear" open and bleed out.

They will probably have to do surgery. They will slice open the ear and let it drain and then stitch it back up kinda like a "quilt."

I have a lab that this happened to. She was a rescue dog and the previous owners did not take care of her. She has ear problems constantly... you will have to keep an eye on your dog's ears. Most of the time, you can "smell" the infection in them. They also make over the counter cleaners that work really well.

In summary... call the vet. I don't think its life threatening... but, they need to be made aware of it. Its messy if it bursts... my dog's did.

Good luck!

Answer:
It sounds like a hematoma. It sounds like the dog needs an oral antibiotic as well as drops. Hematomas will sometimes go down with the antibiotics so do not allow surgery for a few days. It is a minor surgery but the dog still needs anastesia. They occur when dogs with long heavy ears shake there heads and the blood vessels break and a pocket of blood developes. Sounds a lot worse than it is. Buddy sometimes gets them if I miss the onset of an ear infection he is very suseptible to them due to previous abuse. But they have gone down with the meds. Make sure he gives you an oral antibiotic you really need both. I get Baytril oral and otic they are expensive but I found work the best for Bud.

I'm surprised the vet just gave you gunk and sent you on your way. S/he should have cleaned the ear and thoroughly checked it out.

Did you take your dog in to get examined or did "you" just stop by?

Let us know what your vet said. If he (she) is still not concerned then take your dog to a different vet.
