Dog got into trash and ate chicken bones! HELP!
Question: Before anyone starts freaking out on me... my husband and i forgot to put the trash up before we went to bed. I do NOT need people telling me how mean I am for letting my dogs eat chicken bones. I feel bad enough already. We got up this morning and one of the dogs was in the trash and ate three chicken leg bones. I have a black lab (50 lbs) and a husky mix (40 lbs.) I called the vet and they told me to give the dogs bread and to watch them closely for lethargic behavior, vomiting, diarrhea, sore stomach, etc. Other than that, the vet said we would have to wait and watch them. My husband stayed home with them and has been "watching" their poo all day. So far, they both have gone potty without any problems-- or bones. There hasn't been any bones (that he can see) in the stool. Both are acting normal and eating normally, etc. How long do we need to watch them? How long does a bone take to pass? I'm scared to death. We aren't even sure WHICH dog at the bones. These are my babies. I know, they can't be the first dogs to eat chicken bones... but, I am really afraid that something will happen! Answer: Ah, stuff like this happens. Nobody's going to flame you. It happens to the best of us at least once. It can take a long time for things to pass- even up to a week. The biggest problem with chicken bones is splintering. When they chew them they break into shards that can lodged in the throat. If you see them gagging or they lose their appetite, it's likely there's something stuck. But if you have a vet you trust, listen to his advice. Answer: I agree. They will probably be okay but just keep a close eye on them for a few days. Answer: Mine has done the same and it passed. I was also told to give bread - I'm sure it'll be fine Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
