Megaesophagus in 3 Year Old Golden

Question:
I need to know if there is any treatment out there that can reverse this condition. I also want to know how to cope with it on a day to day basis. HELP!

Answer:
Hi,
to hear about your pooch.
A friend of mine has a huge Malamute who suffers from megaesophagus. The only treatment he requires is that he eats/drinks from elevated dishes in an upright position and that he remains upright for 10-15 minutes after eating.
There are some medications that can be used to help with the reflux, Reglan and Cisapride (sp?).

Here are a couple of links with some good info regarding dogs with megaesphogus.

Has your pooch been tested for Myasthenia Gravis?

and here is a link to a yahoo group for owners of dogs with megaesophagus......they have lots of experience and excellent ideas on how to keep your pooch upright after eating and ideas on the best way to feed him in an elevated position.

Good luck and please keep us updated on how he's doing.

Answer:
Thanks so much for the info. My vet has prescribed Cisaprine, and tests were made for myasenia g. I have my dog's dishes elevated, but will try a nice slow 15 minute walk after meals to see if that helps. Thanks for the web sites too. You're great!

Answer:
The baileys chair has proved to be very helpful for many dogs with megaesophagus, Soda the greyhound botom right on this page nearly died as a result of his condition for a good month was was hospitalize and feed intravenouse and then thru tube fed, now hen can eat normally using the bailey's chair for him it has been a lifesaver

hi there. i am a cat rescuer in wisconsin. last june i rescued a kitten with aspiration pneumonia. this was due to his megaesophagus. when he throws up(very often) he aspirates and comes down with pneumonia. also due to the vomiting he has not been able to get nutrients out of his food, causing malnutrition and growth retardation and muscular deformaties. he has come a long way since then and is almost a year old now. he has pneumonia again and is anemic. and is only 2.5 pounds. however he is active and now eating again. the vet is trying science diet ad(antioxident diet) jack loves it and is eating 2 cans a day and has gained 9 oz since friday. this food is also available for dogs, and may build or help build up more immunity. jack really seems to have perked up and is keeping most of the foosd down now. i would encourage you to ask your vet about it. like me you are probably at the point where you will try anything. i am eager to hear from others about this disorder and what worked for them and what did not. and just to support eachother through this would be wonderful. anyone experiencing the same as us can e mail me and we can compare some notes or communicate more about this horrible disease.
