dry paw pads

Question:
I recently noticed my puppy's paw pads are really really dry. Could this be because she's not drinking enough water? I've tried freezing a kong overnight with water inside and she's not all that excited over it. Any other suggestions besides soaking her food in water? Thanks!

Answer:
I'm not overly sure that extra water will clear up a dry paw pad. Try it, I'm not saying it wont work. But our dogs get try pads and they drink TONS. My dog is a 13 lb shih tzu and she drinks a liter or more a day of water plus had wet down food at supper time and she still gets dry paws. I have found that it has more to do with her enviroment. For example, they are digging up my street so she's been walking on a lot of sand and dry dirty, this has made her paws sooo dry. However, while she had her pups, she didn't go for walks for (6weeks) and it cleared right up. Now that she's walking again, it's come back. (if they get my street done this year I'll be soooo happy. lol) I used conditioner on her coat when she gets a bath so I make sure to put some on her feet too and it helps.

So basically, check your dogs enviroment. Maybe try some conditioner (make sure to rinse it off well). You could also try calling your ver (they give free advice over the phone) and see if maybe putting aloe vera or something on your dogs paws will help.

If the pads get VERY dry and cracked make sure you take your dog to the vet.
