Lactation

Question:
I think I have found out where the "health" forum is. My situation is that one of my dogs is a female non-spayed cocker spaniel. She was is in season almost two months ago. She doesn't appear to be pregnant but she has had milk for a few days and has started some nesting signs. She is an experienced bitch. No, I do not run a puppy mill, for those who may be wondering. My question is - does anyone know if there is any other reason why she may be carrying milk, other than imminent whelping?

Answer:
It could be a case of canine false pregnancy. Have a look at this site for more information: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...pregnancy.html

Bring her to the vet to confirm.

May I know why your didn't want to spay your dog? If you are not a breeder, what did you do with the puppies from the previous litters since you said that your pet is an "experienced bitch"?

Answer:
Her previous puppies were given to family members that wanted a puppy from her and the sire, in particular. I do not sell any puppies, nor do I give them to people I don't know or those that I deem to be irresponsible owners.

Answer:
There are only 2 reasons for a bitch to get milk. 1. She's prego 2. she's experiencing a false pregnancy.

If you are 100% positive that an intact male did not accidently mate with your dog then she's most likely having a false pregnancy. You really need to take her to the vet to be sure. YOu may want to consider getting your girl spayed now that you've bred her. (I would assume that you are not planning on breeding again) This will stop her form expereincing this again as it can be quite stressful for the dog.

Answer:
Thanks for the information on false pregnancies. I appreciate it. The intact male that got to her was also one of my own dogs, Desimus, a male cocker spaniel. The two of them have produced other litters, all of which were planned with owners for the puppies before the pregnancies even occurred. I also have three other dogs, all spayed or neutered. If Chloe does give birth this time, it will be her last litter. If she is not pregnant, she will be spayed also.

Answer:
I sincerely doubt that your dog is prego. I'm sure that you are aware form your last litter, but a pregnant female only develops milk about 1 week from birth and as close as 72 hrs before. At this point you would KNOW if there is anyone else in there. she would be big, you could feel them even if there is only one pup. To be on the safe side, prepare of pups but I doubt there are any. PLEASE keep us updated tho. If she does have pups I personally would love to see the pisc's.
