Lab Results and Need Advice

Question:

good morning all,

My mom's cat Jax is 2 years old. She's always been really active, mischievous, playful, etc. For the last few months she's become listless, sleeping more than normal, lost weight, and doesn't play hardly at all.

I took her to the vet and had a full lab panel done. She has some abnormalities but the vet says it's no big deal. He gave her a vitamin shot and some vitamins to put in her food and that was it. She is a little better, yet not her same personality.

Anyways, here are a few of the areas that were abnormal - i was a reading a little about them online and it seems like it could be a type of anemia problem. Her MCV was 55.5H (normal 39-55), MCHC 29.0 L (30.0-36.0), total protein 8.1H (5.4-7.8), A/G ratio 0.5L (0.9-2.6), CPK 385H (20-350).

Any thoughts? Thank You!

Answer:
If the cat might be anemic it could be a sign of an autoimmune problem. Was your cat tested for FeLV and FIV (these are the most common autoimmune diseases)? If your cat is indeed anemic it could turn into a much more serious problem. Anemia in cats is caused by an underlying problem, it's not caused by iron deficiency as it is in humans. I suggest you push your vet to explore this further. Not to scare you, but I had a 7 year old cat who died in May from some sort of autoimmune disease. We know it wasn't FeLV or FIV because he was tested for these, but by the time we realized he was sick he was so anemic we had to have him put to sleep. The vet wanted to test him post mortem to find out what he had that made him so anemic but I declined as it wouldn't have brought my cat back. Anyway, I am very surprised that your vet wouldn't explore any kind of anemia further, especially in a cat who is only 2 years old. Good luck, and keep me posted on how things go.

Answer:
Anemia can be caused by internal bleeding. I am also surprised your vet didn't explore further especially with all the other symptoms. :(

I would take poor Jax to a different vet for a second opinion right away. Good Luck and please post with an update.

Answer:
I agree i would take the kitty to a diffrent vet and take a copy of hus vet records with you!
