mucus in poo

Question:
3 days ago, I got Sydney (9wks old) her first bone (3" smoked femur) from Pet Smart. It is smooth, no sharp edges with a little bit of marrow in it. She loves it. The day after I first let her chew on it (I have let her have it every day for a little while), she started having soft poo with mucus in it . She has eaten some of the marrow out, which is the idea, right? Could that be what is causing the changes in her poo? That has been the only change in her diet (currently bad kibble that the previous owner had her on). I am not too concerned at this point, there is no blood in the stool, she is still eating well and is very active. If it continues I will take a sample to the vet Monday to check for worms.
Thanks

Answer:
Mucous in stool can be caused by any number of things, but basically it means the colon has been irritated by something.
I would take the bone away (my dogs can't have them at all, they have the same reaction) and watch her, but because she's so young and you're not sure what exactly is going on, a trip to the vet is a good idea if it continues or anything else seems off.

Answer:
some dogs cannot tolerate the chemicals in those bones (smoked, cured, rawhides, etc) and they get diarrhea, irritated colons, mucus in stools, etc. Just take the bone away and if her stools get back to normal, good. if they don't, yep a trip to the vet is a good idea

Answer:
Don't feed bones/pig ears/anything similar until your dog has had all its vaccines. Some bones and especially pig ears, can have viruses on them that can infect and kill puppies. Please don't wait to go to the vet if the symptoms worsen at all.
