Teacup Yorkie is sick
Question: My Teacup Yorkie is 1 year and 6 months old. She was perfectly fine this am when we left and now we got back home and she is very lathargec and she is laying in the bed and she is shaking. She is not vomiting and she doesn't have diarreaha. Her nose is wet and she did drink and eat this am. It's Sat at 5 and the vet is closed what should I do? Thank you Answer: Did she eat or drink this evening? Is there a chance she could have gotten into something poisonous, like antifreeze, rat poison, etc? Many (unless corrosive) poisonous substances can be at least partly taken care of in an emergency situation by making the dog vomit; force-feeding hydrogen peroxide works wonders. But that's only if you know for SURE something non-corrosive was ingested. Honestly, I have no clue...I imagine no vet would be able to give you a diagnosis over the phone. I'd get her to an ER vet, or go through the phone book and try finding a vet with an emergency contact or answering service. Hope she's OK, please post back...and really try getting her to a vet. Answer: Unless your dog normally 'shakes' from being nervous her body could be going into shock and there could be some internal problems with organs. Has she injested anything different? As Carina suggested, corrosive? Or maybe something very fatty like bacon or gravy? This can cause pancreatitis and its' very serious. I would get your dog to the vet ASAP!! Don't take any chances. If for example it is pancreatitis food and water must be withheld for up to or over a week and your dog needs to be on IV for hydration. Please don't wait, take her now!! This could be very serious, life threatening. Call another vet, every city has a 24 hour service, look it up in the phone book!! NOW! It's a wives tale that the dogs nose is wet/dry/cold/warm means anything - it means NOTHING! Answer: Thanks everyone for responding! She is fine now, my neighbors uncle is a vet and I spoke to him. She got a lot better right after I spoke to him. He told me to continue to monitor her. She is acting completely normal now. We are very very very protective of her so I can't imagine what she got into, if anything. Her stomach sounded very gassy, and now it doesn't so who knows. I found an emergency vet and if I see her getting bad again, I will take her there. She has pancreatitis on Christmas because my mother in law was sneaking her food under the table and the poor thing almost died, it was very scary, she was in the hospital for 2 days. Thanks again, I will keep you posted Answer: Glad your little baby is feeling better! I just have to inform you, though, that there is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie(or poodle, or Chi). These dogs come from backyard breeder or puppy mills. This is merely a very badly bred dog, who is way undersized. Due to that fact, health problems can crop up! Answer: If she had pancreatitis you should get some blood work done. She may seem normal to you but if her pancreatic enzymes are 'borderline' she can get deathly ill within a matter of moments. I am surprised your vet friend didn't suggest this to you. Go to your vet and get the blood work done to check the amalayse and lipase (sp) enzyme levels OR YOU MAY BE SORRY!
