bringing up and sick
Question: Miss Becky a Basset Hound age 10 has been sick bringing up last night and now is bringing up white stuff and is listless. She was like this two weeks ago too but got better. She is 10 and 3 months and at age 2 had the intusseption and does have a very sensitive stomach. The vet said she was OK last time but here we go again! Thank you. Answer: Thanks will get her in tomorrow and if she's worse tonight will get her to emergency. Georgie Answer: Can never be too careful. Let us know okay Answer: She has an appointmenjt today with vet in Calgary. The strange thing is she drinks and then brings it up! I am really worried! Thx for responses. Answer: Sounds like it may be pancreatitis but only a thought If this is the case all food/water must be withheld for atleast a week Dog will need to be on IV fluid drip Please let us know!! Pancreatitis can flare up now and then and if it is this, it can easily be remedied Answer: Thank you the symptons sure sound like Pancreatitis. I think she had it a couple of weeks ago but did get better but not this time. We are going into vet at 3:00 and I will let you know! Georgie Answer: I thank the persons who emailed and the one about the fact it might be Pancreatitis. Well that's what it is and she's in the hospital vet in Airdire having been diagnosed in Calgary. Thhe fact I had a chance to look it up and the sympsons were exactly the same readied me for the bad news. Her readings should have been 970 but were 2056 Other one supposed to be 600 but was 1571. So I hope she will be OK. The vet in Calgary said the fact she was still walking was encouraging. her chlorestral (whatever) is 100 too high and also her heart rate was high which sort of ruled out Addisons which I also know all about! Thank you. I am so impressed and will recommend this site! Will keep you in touch. Never thought of it as being Pancreatitis -- Diabetes because she was so thirsty but would bring it back up so was well dehydrated and shaking. Thank you again. Georgie and Miss Becky Airdrie, AB. Answer: Thanks for the update, I was pretty sure thats what it sounded like, pancreatitis! Diet change will be needed you know, did the vet discuss this with you at all? Pls keep informed Luba Answer: Luba - yes vet said her diet had to change although she is a slim 44 pounds but I have been guilty of giving her too many treats lately. She has had a very sensitive tummy since the intusseption at age 2. Thx for the advice and possible diagnosis because I was prepared when the tests came back. Thx again I just hope she is OK and all treats will be gone! Georgie and Miss Becky Answer: No you don't have to give up treats, just change the type of treat you give her! Pancreatitis is caused by fatty greesy foods and cheap dog foods lol! Low fat diet is what your dog needs. Some dogs, a simple strip of bacon or a teaspoon of beef gravy on the food can trigger a pancreatic attack! If I were you , you may want to consider making your own food for her. Very simple foods Boiled turkey, chicken fat and skin removed Supplement with some boiled potato and other raw veggies chopped very fine BUT I would probably start her on baby food then graduate slowly, mixing the chicken with the baby food MediTreats are fine, you can get them at your vet and she can have veggies and fruits for snacks I'm sure she'll be okay, she's on IV now and it will just take a few days to let the pancrease rest! Answer: Actually she gets Nutro Sr. with glocosomine but guess that might change. She also gets hamburg and Iams canned food mixed. She loves carrots so I really do think it was too many treats that caused this although she does have a sensitive tummy! Thx again - she loves chicken and turkey so will try that. Isn't chicken high in protein. Thx again. I hope to get her home soon! Georgie Answer: I hope she is home with you soon too Absolutely NOOO hamburger NOOO way !! You'll kill her! I'm gonna give you some links that you should read through, print it off and read it when you have time, there's a lot of info here but it's important okay. http://www.mscc.ca/pancreatitis.html http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/riverien/nutrigrains.htm As a rule, animal sources of protein (high biologic) are superior to plant sources. Too little high biologic protein in a dog's diet can cause a protein deficiency which is reflective in diseases that may include skin and chronic ear infections, reproductive, heart, kidney, liver, bladder, thyroid and adrenal gland malfunctions. A high fat intake may reak havoc on the pancreas - the organ that is responsible for the production of digestive enzymes. Pancreatic inflammation (pancreatitis) can cause severe illness in animals Eggs & dairy products cause big problems for dogs with pancreatitis. You have to feed a low fat, low fibre diet that is easy to digest & eliminate dairy & eggs. I would say the raw eggs & the cottage cheese were as much to blame as the fatty meats. Answer: Ooopse on you MissBecky ha ha I'm replying from the other post you started on the same topic, tricky on this board for you huh! Yes the hamburger could definitely cause pancreatitis so no more!! How is she doing today? Answer: Just talked to vet and he was going to call! He said she is doing fine and is a real trooper! Also her veins due to age (like mine) are very fine so she has two shaved patches to get the iv thingy in. She had water and kept it down and they are going to try food at noon and if she keeps it down she can come home with new food and lots of instructions. He said she's a real trooper. Of course she has two vets but she is a fighter! I hope this doesn't come back. I must say I found a very good site which I will give you and have been getting lots of advice re Pancreatitis. Georgie ----- Original Message Answer: Doctor Luba, well done Answer: Oops I forgot to reply to this. Miss Becky is home - she came home last night and was all happy and a different dog then the one that went in. She is on Bay-Tril every 24 hours and was put on Hills Prescription I.D. which I tried to give her some and she brought up some water. So we forgot about that and I left l/4 cup water out at night and she is no longer breathing fast and heavy which she was before and the two-week ago occurence of this. So she did some watchdogging, got a bit of boiled chicken mixed in with the new food -- she seems to prefer Walthams low fat canned food. I at times (or maybe it's because I'm always running around with a syringe for water) don't think she recognizes me but maybe not. She was 10 on Dec. 5. So at least she's home and ok for now! Thanks for all the support! Georgie Answer: To Luba: I used to live in Owen Sound, Ontario. (small world) Georgie Answer: I am so glad that she is doing fine!! YIPPIE Make sure her food is at room temperature There are a lot of grains in canned and processed dry foods which you may want to avoid at this particular time (something vets don't tell you) your dog can't really digest grains that are processed so much. Kind of like someone being gluten intolerant or lactose intolerant. You may want to try just boiled chicken and baby food for a week or so, luke warm. Add a little mashed potato with no butter or salt in them to it and this will help her stools too. I am so happy she is doing better and home now (hugs to her) for being such a strong girl for mommie!! DR Luba...woo hoo You compliment me too much Anita Answer: Last night at 7ish Miss Becky got so hungry she even ate Prescription diet and Walthams canned, rice and diced chicken breast. Up to now it was only a wee bit but still rationing her. She ate again this morning so hope that's good news. Thx again .The vet in Calgary Dr. Boughen wants to see her again in two weeks from last Monday when she saw her! A very good vet. Thx for this wonderful site and info because I certainly knew nothing about this disease.! I am so lucky to have found it!I also didn't know you warm the food helpstoo. Georgie Miss Becky Frazer Answer: Luba- The information you have provided is great and will be a benefit to me when my little pup comes home from the Vet. I also cannot say enough for this forum and this web site. Thanks to all of you for opening your doors to all of our wonderful pets. Again, thank you for elaborating with the information you provide. I always check this site when anything out of the ordinary affects my dogs and the information and links you provide are very helpful. Thank you! Answer: I am sorry I forgot to come back to tell you that Miss Becky actually did the Basset 500 today. She is on Waltham's low fat but gets diahreah sometimes so the vet is putting her on a new med to try for chrones maybe! Other than that she is doing wonderfully! Thank you all esp Luba for all the wonderful info. It sure helped to understand it and I know some dogs have as well as people died from it but she had very good vets and I had good info. I noticed an article on halters. I trained becky, Dazey the old Basset and The fiesty Airedale with the promise collar . It was that or they wouldn't get a walk and I even walked two with crutches twice with the promise collar and no problem. Despite some goon remarking 'look at that'''''''x''''x''x''' Thanks again! I honestly never thought she'd turn out as good as she has and it took awhile but she's back with us. Thx again. Georgie and Miss Becky Answer: Re Becky. I don't know if I told you or not but the Vet in Calgary wanted her tests redone and they were down to normal. I never want to see that again. The food she was eating wasn't cheap but I guess she was getting too many treats so now it's only medic treats and she eats them. She still gets a bit of chicken mixed with Walthams. Thx again Georgie Answer: Wow,this is the kind of thing I like to read before going to bed,Dr Luba you're great and good luck to Miss Becky!!! Answer: Tx for the update Miss Becky Good news is always wonderful to hear ntc I'm glad it's benefitted you, if you have any questions start a thread and there are wonderful people on here that can always help out Anita u funny girl Answer: Oh and another thing. Miss Becky has a new cat friend from SPCA. not the one I wanted - I wanted a coone cat but somehow we picked Jordie who is six and this is her third and permanent home. I thought Miss Becky missed Mr. Mow. Well the cat's name now is Houdini because she's a bit of an escape artist but follows me around all the time like a Coone. Anyhow I left both of them alone and came home to a huge barking session at the front door for all the neighbours to hear and Houdini jumped up on the chair. These cats are far too smart for Becky because they won't run they just sit and she keeps barking! Anyhow she's back to normal! Georgie Answer: Good going!!!! I too am a fan of Maine Coons, they are sooo beautiful and most with a wonderful temperament... I might have missed something, but were you the owner of Mow Mow? Thank's for saving a kitty Answer: I have a Maine Coon you got to brush them once a week at least. But wonderful..color characters I tell you! Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
