I think my puppy has something stuck in his belly
Question: Hi everyone, Just after some advice. I have a 6 month old Kelpie cross Staffy. Being the naughty puppy that he is I am often chasing him around the house to get bits and peices out of his mouth. Of late he has taken a liking to plastic bottles (softdrink bottles etc). Last night when I got home from work I didnt take much notice that he didnt go to the toilet. I fed him and he ate all of his food, however this morning when we woke up and I went to feed him he wouldnt touch his food and is acting very out of character. Normally he is so jumpy and wont leave you alone, all he wanted to do was sit there and cuddle. He looked very upset and his stomache felt reasonable hard. He is booked in to see the vet tonight, I am just wondering what normally happens when a dog has something stuck in their tummy/throat? Is surgury the only option or are there other ways to fix the issue? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. Answer: I don't think this can wait another day. If he's blocked, he'll die pretty quickly. The only way to know what they will have to do is with xrays. Good luck. Answer: oh no I hope they get it out. make sure your properly puppy proof the house before you bring him back from the vet Answer: Aww poor puppy. It probably depends on many different things like how far down, size shape etc.. Hopefully it's not too complicated Answer: Does your vet have an emergency number? It may be bloat, and if so your dogs life is in danger. Watch him closely and if he starts pacing, dry heaving, rolling around, etc, you need to try to get ahold of a vet right away. Answer: I thought from the post the dog was seeing a vet tonight but he's waiting till morning? If the vet knew what might be wrong seems odd they would wait till the next day. Answer: I thought it was tonight as in the night of the 23rd... Answer: I guess it depends what time zone she's in. Fingers crossed that the pup is alright. Please keep us posted. Answer: I would have taken pup to emergency right away. One of my mini Dachshunds had a thread hanging from his mouth one night several years ago - I knew it had to be from the new blanket I had bought him because I had only given it to him that morning. Our vet had just closed for night so we raced him to Emergency and they took him ahead of all other dogs waiting for treatment. Had the thread not been hanging from his mouth we would not have known without careful examination of the multi-coloured blanket - and he was not normally a chewer of blankets - preferred silky fabrics. He was X-rayed and it was determined that the fibres "might" pass - but he had to be monitored 24/7 and was given what I call Doggie Ex-Lax that had to be mixed with bread. We dropped him off at our vet's every morning for 3 days and picked him up at night as vets are not there during the night. Any sign of throwing up and he would have been on the operating table. On Day 3 he passed the fibres - day 3 being the magic number. My Eskie caught a virus in October that was going around Toronto - and would not eat or poop and being a Hoover I was scared to death that he had a blockage and we raced to the vet again. Thankfully, it was "just" the flu. Please get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Answer: I haven't been online all week so I'm wondering if there's an update on this poor little puppy? Answer: I have been watching as well. Hate it when people don't report back - especially when we know condition could be life threatening. Answer: I've been wondering as well...sure hope the puppy is OK. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
